I got a customer loyalty card from Harris Teeter in high school in about 1997 when they opened in my hometown. And the same phone number (mom's landline) has worked for 20 years. This week I went to the store and my number didn't work at the checkout. I went to customer service to get a new card and they asked to see a drivers license.
I don't feel comfortable giving that sort of information out without knowing what sort of protection is involved, especially considering the data breaches other companies have had with data that is supposed to be protected.
I called the customer service phone number see if they could look up my old customer number so I wouldn't have to give them potentially sensitive personal information. They couldn't find me. They could find my mother which is a little odd seeing as I don't think she ever shops there.
They said that they are asking for a drivers license to keep people from abusing the double cupon system. I said ok, but can I just show my licence and not have my licence number recorded so that customer service can see that it really is me? They said they need the number as proof of residency. I said ok, can I show you a water bill - that would have my name and address on it from the water company. They said they need a drivers licence number.
Long story short - I'm not willing to open my self up to the potential for identity theft to save a few cents on yogurt.
