Some stroke survivors can only perceive one side of their body despite having physically normal vision. As a result of one-side neglect, they may shave (or put make-up) on only one side of their face, eat food from one side of their plate, or walk into unnoticed objects.

If you know someone with one-side neglect, use these strategies to help them incorporate their neglected side more and potentially regain ability.
1. Place objects on the neglected side. You’re not helping by putting your loved one’s fork on his now favored side or bringing the remote to him. In fact, one of the most helpful things you can do is to place objects on his neglected side to force him to turn that side. The more he acknowledges that side, the more likely he will be able to eventually perceive it.
One exception: Don’t place anything he might need in an emergency, such as the control for calling hospital nurses, on his neglected side.
2. Interact from the neglected side. The same principle applies to people. Stand on your loved one’s neglected side and either hold their hand or rub their arm as you speak. A simple touch is usually enough to get someone to turn your direction, but if not, gently place your hand under his chin and slowly turn it for him.
Using this technique engages auditory, visual, and tactile senses at the same time and can help make a stronger connection to the neglected side than a visual task alone can do.
3. Guide the neglected hand. A similar approach can help when your loved one isn’t aware of an object on his neglected side. For example, if he can’t find the fork to the left of his plate, take his hand in yours (tactile) and say (auditory), “Let’s get your fork.” Then, guide his hand toward the fork. His eyes should naturally follow the movement of your hands (visual).
4. Encourage scanning. Systematically scanning your field of vision, like you would scan a page while reading, is a great way to engage the neglected side. Activities that promote this include:
• Word searches
• Puzzles
• Board games and cards
• Reading (draw a line on neglected side as a start/stop point)
