The author Sri ‘M’ is an extraordinary individual. His uniqueness lies not only in the fact that at the young age of 19 and a half, he travelled to snow clad Himalayas from Kerala, and there he met and lived for several years with a ‘real-time’ yogi, Babaji, but also that he should undertake such an unusual and adventurous exploration, given his non-Hindu birth and anteced...more

Men and women who seek to know their true self travel far and wide, read everything they can lay their hands on and in that insatiable thirst for knowledge the luckier among such a crowd find a guide who like a signpost, shows them a path. Not everyone among us is a seeker for it takes immense amounts of patience, self control and an inner fire that never simmers down even in the most dire of circumstances. In my limited view of the world, I have seen a few people whose plain of thought is on a...more

Where logic vanishes, mysticism appears! Apprenticed to a Himalayan Master is one of a kind story of a Muslim boy - Mumtaz Ali aka Sri M (Madhukar Nath) - living with his loving family in India's Kerala State. He, right from his childhood, is seen gradually developing a deep interest in Hindu monks and Muslim mystics. Sri M tells a tale of his life, which revolves around a magnetic pull to the mighty Himalayas, mystic shrines, ashrams in the Himalayan foothills, his multiple stints at religious...more

This book reminds me of 'Autobiography of a Yogi' by Paramahansa Yogananda. Sri M (Mumtaj Ali), who is given Hindu name Madhu, describes his spiritual journey undertaken by Babaji. The description of Himalayas are quite beautiful and help us explore a world that is unknown to most of us. There are numerous stories of miracles which I fail to believe but I have no reason to disapprove it since those are unknown dimensions for more most us.

Reading Sri M’s biography has truly been an extraordinary experience for me. I feel rather inadequate to describe in words this story that sounds unbelievable at some points yet arouses faith in existence of the human soul and its transgression to a higher domain. I was intrigued by the preface and was curious to accompany the explorer on his spiritual journey. Sri M describes his experiences in a very simple and forthcoming style. It is the story of a boy born in a Muslim family in Thirunvanthp...more
I am not a skeptic but still find it hard to believe few of the incidents Sri M has described to have happened. I don’t question the spiritual experiences, highly evolved Himalayan masters, travels and journeys he undertook which I particularly enjoyed but the penultimate chapter was a bit too much. The vision near Kailash Parvath, where he sees the heads of various faiths together sounded deliberate and politically balanced. This autobiography should have included some of Sri’s learning from th...more

This book proves this quote right. There is distance between possibility and reality, it seems that writer had enough courage and commitment to walk that distance. Everyone of us have belief, but belief can offer only solace. The only way to find solution is searching for truth. That is what writer did in his life.

If the experiences of the author are true, This book is an evidence that there are many things which are beyond our understanding and comprehension. The experiences that Mr. M passes through is indeed hard to believe. But like he has clearly mentioned in the foreword of this book, those people who are skeptical about these details could just ignore it and read the book just to understand the teachings of his Guru.In my opinion, this spiritual autobiography is worth the read.
‘Apprenticed to a Himalayan Master’ by Sri M, is a brave account of a Muslim boy’s journey into a world of miracles, evolved individuals, wonders of the other-worldly, and of course, the doctrines of the master he is apprenticed to.
Before discussing further on the book, it would be apt to mention that this is not a conventional autobiography. The events mentioned in this book, are more bizarre than the most imaginative fictional accounts. Hence, to approach this unconventional book, we need to a...more

I brought this book a year ago and for a year it was in my book-shelf. After reading autobiography of a yogi I thought I would be unable to get my hands on a book like that but I was wrong. Apprenticed to a Himalayan Master resumes from Autobiography of Yogi only in this case we are fortunate that the author SRI M is living among us.

This book helped me understand that spiritual growth can not be achieved overnight. But it can definitely be achieved through constant practice and devotion to guru. Also helped me know that there are lot of spiritually grown souls in India and they are not known to the world still.

A genuine, child like experiences of a man born in a Muslim family drawn closer by the Himalayan sages. Most people would like to talk about the 'unnatural' events described, but I tend to differ. For me the one take away is sincerity.

Apprenticed to a Himalayan Master is the story of Mumtaz Ali Khan’s fascinating journey from Kerala to the snow capped peaks of the Himalayas and back. In this book we get a peek into his life- how this boy who was born in a traditional Muslim family in Kerala evolved into a yogi who is known to the world, today, as Sri M. The latter’s profound knowledge of the Upanishads is born out of his first-hand experience of meeting up with some extraordinary people in the Himalayas in the late 1960’s.

Never thought I would read a book like this one. I'd planned to gift this book to a spiritually inclined person. For some strange reason, I decided I'll read this one before gifting. Spellbinding : Sri M explained his mysterious journey at 19 in Himalayas in an audacious fashion.
“Forty years ago, a young man of nineteen from Kerala, the southern-most state of India, was found in deep meditation in the cave of Vyasa up in the Himalayas near Badrinath, close to the Indo-Tibetan border regions. Even in those days, a teenager going away to the Himalayas to meditate was not a common occurrence. What made this case almost unbelievable was that the young man in question was not eve...more

As the author mentions in the preface, some incidents are beyond logical reasoning. It depends on the reader whether to take it or not. However, one must read this book to get to know about all the spiritually advanced people who were in this land in a century or so. It will give you an introduction about some of them. For instance, I got to learn about J Krishnamurti's rise which I had never read anywhere else before.

Not a literary masterpiece. But the content of the book is priceless. The author takes us through his rather unbeaten path of spiritual journey where he meets many ascetics with various siddhis. In addition to a book about the lives of himalayan yogis, this book also serves as a well accounted travelogue too. A good read.

Autobiography Of A Yogi Movie
A real life story of a Himalayan Yogi - conveying deeper dimensions of human consciousness and a oneness of all Godheads. Reading this thrilling account automatically unleashes the hidden potential of human mind to a higher dimension.
A good read. As the author moves towards the end, he explains situations he goes through and at some point the book looses its impact on the reader given to the current day beliefs and today's society we live in.

The first few chapters of writer's local contacts and the last few chapters of his settling down as common man are little boring. However, his Himalayan experiences are interesting and at times hard to believe.

A spiritual treasure
This book was absolutely fascinating and filled with truth and miracles. I will always treasure the parts about Sri Guru Babaji- the deathless Yogi Christ. I highly recommend this for all.

A must read for a spiritual seeker. Reminds one of Autobiography of a Yogi. Not in the same class but still some great insights
The book describes the life events of a muslim boy Mumtaz Ali Khan who from childhood had unique spiritual experiences, later gets apprenticed to a mysterious guru Babaji, and details the transformation of him into Madhukar Nath or simple Sri M, an enlightened Yogi. The book is full of miracles and strange experiences but is really short on any spiritual guidance for the readers.

I knew what to expect when I picked this book up. It's along the lines of autobiography of a yogi. Just that like a mishmash of telephone book & a map it has a mind boggling number of names & places. Some incidents mentioned in the book are so fantastic that they are unbelievable. But then this book is 1 of such books where u need to suspend disbelief, logic & just soak up the story. Maybe when the time comes even normal readers might grasp such miracles thru experience. 1 more thing...more

I really felt like, I was with Shri M in every step that he took to reach Master and got enlightened and further how he struggled in life to come to the current stage where he himself is a Master now who can enlighten the truthful Seekers.
Thank you Guruji for bringing up this wonderful Spiritual book that helps a true seeker to attain Mukthi.

While on one hand, this book would goad the spiritual seeker on in his quest of truth; on the other, it would fill the already dubious mind of the man of science with scepticism vis-a-vis spirituality. Sri M manages just perfectly to enthral the reader with the mysteries and wonders of the inner self. However, he fails to cut out a totally genuine figure for himself, owing to the occasional preternatural description which, instead of heightening the prevailing effect, only serves to smother rati...more
You admire this book and the writer not for its literature but simply for the fascinating recounts this blessed man has witnessed and went through in his journey of life. The language is simple and very easy to understand and follow; the stories are not. One word of advice for anybody reading this book is to have an open mind because Shri M's encounters are clearly not for readers who think these stories are written just to fill up pages in this fascinating book. Happy reading guys, cheers!!
I loved reading Sri M experience. Two things which left s strong impression was Madhu and Guruji having mutton biryani. Unlike traditional thought that killing and eating an animal is sin, it was more about what's they wanted to have at that point of time.
Second was the the thought Guruji said, that is there comes a point when the need of Guru can be a deterrent and one had to go beyond. Must read if you are a fan of Autobiography of an Yogi.
